Sun Protection On The Mountain

Sun Protection On The Mountain

We all know the importance of sunscreen when you're at the beach but what about on the mountain?

When you're on the mountain the intensity of the sun at higher altitudes greatly increases. For every 1000 feet or 300m in elevation above sea level, the sun's intensity can increase by 10% this means that in a days skiing you can be exposed to stronger sun than at the beach. Throw in snow reflection and your sun exposure gets even higher.

On the mountain we like to recommend using a mineral sunscreen. Mineral sunscreens work differently to chemical sunscreens. Both have their pro's and cons, if you would like to read more... check out our Sunscreen crash course here.

In short... chemical sunscreens are formulated to absorb into your skin to allow the suns rays to dissipate as heat, while mineral sunscreens act as a barrier between the sun and your skin. Due to the high intensity rays you are exposed to on the mountain, we prefer to use a mineral sunscreen like Dermatone that will act like a shield between our skin and UV rays.

Our Dermatone sunscreen is perfect for wear during high altitude activities like skiing or snowboarding. The Dermatone Mineral line is a great natural option that will protect your skin from that intense mountain sun. Available in a pocket sized lip balm, and no touch stick, plus a larger lotion, the mineral line is a great option for a day of skiing. Check out the full Dermatone range here...
