Ski Gear Checklist: The Essentials

Ski Gear Checklist: The Essentials

At On Mountain, we understand that planning a ski trip isn't just about the destination; it's about the thrilling slopes, stunning vistas, and the connection with nature. To ensure your ski getaway is nothing short of extraordinary, meticulous preparation is key. We've put together a concise Ski Gear Checklist to help you make the most of your upcoming adventure. Let's dive in!

Equipment

Before you hit the mountain ensure your ski gear is in top notch condition!

Skis/Snowboard: Check for any damage and make sure bindings are properly adjusted. We recommend taking these to a professional to cast a fresh pair of eyes over your gear to ensure good to go.
Boots: Verify that they fit comfortably and snugly. If its been a while since you last went skiing, you may find your feet have changed shape/size.
Ski Helmets: A common rule of thumb is to replace your helmet every 5 years of general wear and tear, (this may vary depending on the materials your helmet is made of) You should also consider a new helmet if you've had an impact - even though your helmet may look okay on the outside the interior materials that provide you protection may be compromised.
Ski Goggles
Examine for defects and overall condition. Make sure you can see clearly through your goggles and they are still fitting comfortably on your face.
Ski Poles: Check your pole baskets, straps, and the pole itself for general for damage and overall condition. If you're using adjustable poles make sure these are still locking tight at the height you need them.

Clothing

Dress in layers for optimal comfort and warmth. From breathable base layers to water and windproof outerlayers, make sure your clothing is comfortable and not too tight.
Base Layers are a must, opt for materials with moisture wicking and breathable qualities like Merino to keep you comfortable and dry.
Mid Layers: Pack an insulated mid layer as extra layer when needed.
Outer Layers: Waterproof jacket and pants to protect against the snow and wind. Check that any seams are still sealed and not lifting. Also check for a proper fit - making sure your ski jacket and pants aren't too tight or constricting. If you're pants are a bit too big around the waist, opt for some suspenders to help keep them up.
Gloves/Mittens: Opt for warm, waterproof gloves or mittens.
Beanies and sunnies: Don't forget your beanie and sunnies for those Apres Ski moments with your friends.

Accessories

Sunscreen
Don't forget your sunscreen! For every 1000ft/300m in elevation, sun and UV intensity increases by 10% this along with UV rays reflecting off the snow means even though it might be cold and snowy you're at a higher risk of getting sunburnt than at sea level. Also consider a formula that protects you from the wind and cold.

Ski and Boot Carriers
If you want to look like a pro, make sure you have some handy ski straps and carriers to help you get your gear up the mountain with ease.

Hand and Toe Warmers
Bring some hand and toe warmers incase your hands or feet get cold. These can be reusable or single use like our Hello Heat warmers.

Trash Bags
Be a Tidy Kiwi and take any rubbish with you when you leave the mountain!

A successful ski trip is all about the right preparation. By following this quick ski checklist, you'll be equipped with the basics you need for a safe, enjoyable, and unforgettable mountain adventure. So gear up, hit the slopes, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
